Verne's story describes a trip on the "Great Eastern," from Liverpool to New York, and a journey afterwards up the Hudson and to the Falls of Niagara. The descriptive parts of the story are free from Verne's well-known peculiarities, and therefore seem tame coming from his pen ; but in making " the floating city" the scene of a dramatic love story, he is all himself again—particularly at the end, where the hero engages in a duel on deck in the night during a frightful storm, and his antagonist catches the lightning on his uplifted sword and is killed, thus saving the hero from the unpleasantness of killing tbe husband of the woman he loves.

Im Verlauf des Romans geschieht es, dass die beiden Anführer der Gruppe, Everest und Strux, aus nationalen Unterschieden und aus Gelehrtenneid ständig an einander geraten. Als die Expeditionsteilnehmer erfahren, dass es 1854 zum Ausbruch des Krimkrieges gekommen ist, trennt sich die Gruppe eben aus diesen nationalen Differenzen, um separat ihre Vermessungsarbeiten weiter fortzusetzen. Im Angesicht einer Gefahr , die von einem einheimischen Stamm, den Makololos ausgeht, schaffen es die russischen und englischen Wissenschaftler jedoch, über ihre nationalen Differenzen hinwegzusehen und vereinen sich erneut, um ihre Forschungsarbeit gemeinsam beenden zu können. The author has brought to the telling of his story all the old creative skill, the dashing love of adventure, and a surprising show of knowledge of the flora and fauna and the geography of the Antarctic seas. The hero of the book takes passage from the far-off Kerguelen Islands on the ship Halbrane, whose captain, Len Guy, had been very reluctant to carry him because it was impossible to tell where they might make port. But Mr. Joerling persisted and accomplished his purpose. The captain was an eccentric and silent man, yet when Mr. Joerling informed him that Connecticut was his home he showed a sudden interest. This was because the captain knew of the nearness of Connecticut to the Island of Nantucket, whence Pym and his companions had sailed on their disastrous voyage. It turns out that Len Guy is the brother of Poe's Captain Guy, and that his sole aim in life is to discover this brother,—lost in the Arctic ice. In fulfilment of the purpose, which had become a monomania, the Halbrane sailed for the Arctic seas, and there adventures were encountered which will astonish and delight every reader, young or old. Indeed, an Antarctic mystery is essentially a book for young people, but, like its predecessor, it will startle the old as well.

As the story is too full of detail to be told in a line or two, we must leave our readers to gather its wonders for himself. They are, we may assure him, inferior to none of the author's previous efforts in that direction.
