Georg Trakls lyrisches Werk besticht durch die sinnliche Kraft seiner Bilder und eine "Lyrik in Moll". Er wird zu den bedeutendsten Frühexpressionisten deutscher Sprache gezählt. Sein hermetisches Schaffen weist jedoch weit darüber hinaus. Gebrandmarkt als Vertreter der "Décadence", die den Verfall stilisiert anstatt eine soziale Utopie zu entwerfen, träumt er von einem neuen, "natürlichen" Menschen, von einer Erneuerung der paradiesischen Unschuld in der Gesellschaft. Charakteristisch für seine Gedichte sind Visionen von düsterer Farbenpracht und eine melodisch-rhythmische Sprache. Im vorliegenden Band sind die Gedichte aus den Jahren 19091914 nebst einer Einführung von Katharina Maier enthalten.

Los poemas que conforman Sebastián en sueño cobran una potencia indestructible al ser leídos como uno solo. La constelación de imágenes que surge de ellos, repetidas pero siempre con su referente en movimiento, sumerge al lector en el universo tan único de Georg Trakl (1887-1914). En un tono autobiográfico pero "despersonalizado" o con la intención de la universalización, el poeta aparece bajo la figura de San Sebastián, Elis o el huésped, enfrentándose consigo mismo bajo la mirada inculpadora de un Dios pétreo, como su hermana, como su madre. Una atmósfera gobernada por el mal, la desgracia y la muerte (siempre prematura o trágica) rodea en igual medida al bosque como al hogar familiar. Si a Trakl se le atribuye cierto hermetismo en su poesía, se debe a su uso particular del lenguaje: una estructura sintáctica que rompe con el orden lógico, la escasez de verbos y la eliminación de los artículos, los simbolismos abiertos y la adjetivación cromática persistente y desplazada. Más que clausura es una apertura al ritmo y a la melodía de una existencia maldita y atormentada. Ingresar en el mundo de Trakl a través de Sebastián en sueño es recorrer las fuerzas oscuras del ser en el pasaje de un entorno en desaparición (como lo fue el Imperio austro-húngaro) a otro tan hostil (como la Primera Guerra Mundial). El uso precoz de drogas, la estancia en manicomios, su muerte por sobredosis a los 27 años dan testimonio en Trakl de este recorrido junto a la ofrenda tremenda de su poesía.
