Forma i typ
Tacitus's 'Histories' is a detailed account of the reigns of the Roman emperors from 69-96 AD, focusing primarily on the tumultuous Year of the Four Emperors in 69 AD and the subsequent Flavian Dynasty. Written in a detached and objective style, Tacitus uses a combination of historical facts and vivid storytelling to provide a well-rounded view of the political intrigues, military campaigns, and social upheavals of the time. His use of rhetorical flourishes and powerful imagery adds depth and complexity to the narrative, making 'Histories' a compelling read for those interested in the history of ancient Rome. Tacitus's meticulous attention to detail and critical analysis of the events make this work an important contribution to Roman historiography. Historical scholars have praised Tacitus for his unbiased portrayal of the characters and events, making 'Histories' a valuable source for understanding the complexities of Roman history. I highly recommend 'Histories' to anyone looking to delve into the political machinations and social dynamics of ancient Rome, as Tacitus's insightful analysis and engaging narrative style make it a must-read for history enthusiasts.

The Annals by Roman historian and senator Tacitus is a history of the Roman Empire from the death of Augustus to that of Nero, the years AD 14–68, covering the reigns of Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius and Nero. As a senator, Tacitus had access to Acta Senatus, the Roman senate's records, thus providing a solid basis for his work. The Annals provide a key source for modern understanding of the history of the Roman Empire during the 1st century AD.

Forma i typ
Tacitus' 'The Annals' is a masterpiece of Roman historical literature, providing a detailed account of the reigns of Roman emperors Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, and Nero. Written in a concise and powerful style, Tacitus uses his work to critique the moral decline of Roman society under the despotic rule of these emperors. The book is a key source for understanding the political intrigues, conspiracies, and atrocities that characterized this period in Roman history. Tacitus' use of irony and subtle criticism sets 'The Annals' apart as a work of great literary value. Tacitus, a senator and historian in ancient Rome, lived through the tumultuous reigns of the emperors he wrote about. His firsthand experience with the political climate of the time gives his writing a depth of insight into the motivations and actions of those in power. Tacitus' commitment to historical accuracy and his willingness to challenge prevailing narratives make 'The Annals' a vital resource for understanding the complexities of Roman history. For readers interested in Roman history, political intrigue, and the moral dilemmas of power, Tacitus' 'The Annals' is a must-read. This seminal work offers a compelling and thought-provoking analysis of the corrupting influence of absolute power, making it a timeless classic in historical literature.

Tacitus is widely regarded as one of the greatest Roman historians by modern scholars. The surviving portions of his two major works—the Annals and the Histories - examine the reigns of the emperors Tiberius, Claudius, Nero, and those who reigned in the Year of the Four Emperors (69 AD). Tacitus' other writings discuss oratory, Germania and the life of his father-in-law, Agricola, the general responsible for much of the Roman conquest of Britain. Tacitus' works are a chief source next to the Bible and the works of Josephus for providing significant and independent extra-Biblical account of the life and crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth. .

Forma i typ
The Histories is a Roman historical chronicle by Tacitus and it covers the Year of Four Emperors following the downfall of Nero in 68 AD, a year in the history of the Roman Empire in which four emperors ruled in succession: Galba, Otho, Vitellius, and Vespasian. The mode of their accession showed that because imperial power was based on the support of the legions, an emperor could now be chosen not only at Rome, but anywhere in the empire where sufficient legions were amassed. The style of narration is rapid, reflecting the speed of the events. The narrative rhythm leaves no space to slow down or digress. To write effectively in this style, Tacitus had to summarize substantial information from his sources. Along with The Annals, The Histories provide a key source for modern understanding of the history of the Roman Empire during the 1st century AD.

Kings were the original Magistrates of Rome: Lucius Brutus founded Liberty and the Consulship: Dictators were chosen occasionally, and used only in pressing exigencies. Little more than two years prevailed the supreme power of the Decemvirate, and the consular jurisdiction of the military Tribunes not very many. The domination of Cinna was but short, that of Sylla not long. The authority of Pompey and Crassus was quickly swallowed up in Caesar; that of Lepidus and Anthony in Augustus. The Commonwealth, then long distressed and exhausted by the rage of her civil dissensions, fell easily into his hands, and over her he assumed a sovereign dominion; yet softened with a venerable name, that of Prince or Chief of the Senate. But the several revolutions in the ancient free state of Rome, and all her happy or disastrous events, are already recorded by writers of signal renown. Nor even in the reign of Augustus were there wanting authors of distinction and genius to have composed his story; till by the prevailing spirit of fear, flattery, and abasement they were checked. As to the succeeding Princes, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, and Nero; the dread of their tyranny, whilst they yet reigned, falsified their history; and after their fall, the fresh detestation of their cruelties inflamed their Historians. Hence my own design of recounting briefly certain incidents in the reign of Augustus, chiefly towards his latter end, and of entering afterwards more fully into that of Tiberius and the other three; unbiassed as I am in this undertaking by any resentment, or any affection; all the influences of these personal passions being far from me...
