Unlike the traditional detective, the occult detective is employed in cases involving ghosts, curses, and other supernatural elements. Some occult detectives are portrayed as being themselves psychic or in possession of other paranormal powers. The critic August Nemo selected seven mystery stories with the great experts in supernatural phenomena: - The Gateway of the Monster by William Hope Hodgson - The House Among the Laurels by William Hope Hodgson - The Story of Saddler's Croft by E. and H. Heron - The Story of Baelbrow by E. and H. Heron - Green Tea by Sheridan Le Fanu - The Familiar by Sheridan Le Fanu - Aylmer Vance and the Vampire by Alice and Claude Askew For more books with interesting themes, be sure to check the other books in this collection!

Carnacki, The Ghost Finder William Hope Hodgson - Carnacki the Ghost-Finder is a collection of occult detective short stories by English writer William Hope Hodgson, featuring the titular protagonist. It was first published in 1913 by the English publisher Eveleigh Nash. In 1947, a new edition of 3,050 copies was published by Mycroft & Moran and included three additional stories (the last three listed below). In 1951 Ellery Queen covered the Mycroft & Moran version as No. 53 in Queen's Quorum: A History of the Detective-Crime Short Story As Revealed by the 100 Most Important Books Published in this Field Since 1845.For several decades subsequent to the Mycroft and Moran edition, Carnacki collections routinely if not always contained all nine stories. Project Gutenberg Ebook #10832 (2004) contains only the first six stories, however, and arranges them in sequence of their 1910 and 1912 magazine publication. Some other publications follow Project Gutenberg, perhaps using its text.

"Dom na granicy światów" jest historią żyjącego na odludziu człowieka, który uświadamia sobie, że jego dom znajduje się na granicy świata rzeczywistego i jakiegoś innego wymiaru. Umożliwia mu to obserwowanie różnorodnych zjawisk kosmicznych, jak na przykład rozpad Układu Słonecznego. Niesamowite halucynacje bohatera czynią z tej nieco staroświeckiej powieści pasjonującą lekturę.

Welcome to the Essential Novelists book series, were we present to you the best works of remarkable authors. For this book, the literary critic August Nemo has chosen the two most important and meaningful novels ofWilliam Hope Hodgsonwhich are Carnacki, the Ghost Finder and The Night Land. William Hope Hodgson'sworks both contain elements of science fiction, although they also partake of horror and the occult. According to critical consensus, in these works, despite his often laboured and clumsy language, Hodgson achieves a deep power of expression, which focuses on a sense not only of terror but of the ubiquity of potential terror, of the thinness of the invisible bound between the world of normality and an underlying reality for which humans are not suited. Novels selected for this book: - Carnacki, the Ghost Finder - The Night LandThis is one of many books in the series Essential Novelists. If you liked this book, look for the other titles in the series, we are sure you will like some of the authors.

The Ghost Pirates is a horror novel by English writer William Hope Hodgson, first published in 1909. In it, Hodgson never describes in any remarkable details the ghosts - if this is indeed what they are, since their true nature is left ambiguous - he merely reports on their gradual commandeering of the ship. The novel is presented as the transcribed testimony of Jessop, who we ultimately discover is the only survivor of the final voyage of the Mortzestus, having been rescued from drowning by the crew of the passing Sangier. It begins with Jessop's recounting how he came to be aboard the ill-fated Mortzestus and the rumors surrounding the vessel. Jessop then begins to recount the unusual events that rapidly increase in both frequency and severity. In the telling of his tale, Jessop offers only sparse interpretation of the events, spending most of the time relating the story in an almost journalistic fashion, presenting a relatively unvarnished description of the events and conversations as they occurred. He describes his confusion and uncertainty about what he believes he has seen, at times fearing for his own sanity. He eventually hears other members of the crew speak of strange events, most of which the rest of the crew pass off as either bad luck or the result of the witness being either tired or "dotty". Jessop only offers brief personal interpretation; he states that while he cannot discount the idea that the beings plaguing the ship may be ghosts, he presents his theory that they may be beings from another dimension that, while sharing the same physical space as theirs, are normally completely separated to the extent that neither dimension is aware of the existence of the other. He offers only vague, superficial suggestions as to the cause of his theorized dimensional breach. Famous works of the author William Hope Hodgson: The House on the Borderland, The Night Land.

H. P. Lovecraft's essay "Supernatural Horror in Literature" describes the novel as "one of the most potent pieces of macabre imagination ever written". Clark Ashton Smith wrote of it that "In all literature, there are few works so sheerly remarkable, so purely creative, as The Night Land. Whatever faults this book may possess, however inordinate its length may seem, it impresses the reader as being the ultimate saga of a perishing cosmos, the last epic of a world beleaguered by eternal night and by the unvisageable spawn of darkness. Only a great poet could have conceived and written this story; and it is perhaps not illegitimate to wonder how much of actual prophecy may have been mingled with the poesy."

The Night Land William Hope Hodgson - The Night Land is a horror/fantasy novel by English writer William Hope Hodgson, first published in 1912. As a work of fantasy it belongs to the Dying Earth subgenre. Hodgson also published a much shorter version of the novel, entitled The Dream of X (1912).William Hope Hodgson was, like his contemporaries Algernon Blackwood and Arthur Machen, one of the most important, prolific, and influential fantasists of the early twentieth century. His dark and unsettling short stories and novels were shaped in large part by personal experience (a professional merchant mariner for much of his life, many of Hodgsons tales are set at sea), and his work evokes a disturbing sense of the amorphous and horrific unknown. While his nautical adventure fiction was very popular during his lifetime, the supernatural and cosmic horror he is most remembered for only became well known after his death, mainly due to the efforts of writers like H. P. Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith, who often praised his work and cited it as an influence on their own. By the latter half of the twentieth century, it was only his weird fiction that remained in print, and his vast catalog of non-supernatural stories was extremely hard to find.Night Shade Bookss five-volume series presents all of Hodgsons unique and timeless fiction. Each volume contains one of Hodgson's novels, along with a selection of thematically-linked short fiction, including a number of works reprinted for the first time since their original publication. The fourth book of the five-volume set, The Night Land and Other Romances, collects all of his romances and womens fiction, as well as the entirety of his classic 1912 dying-earth novel The Night Land.
