"Nomadin war ich schon als Kind … Nomadin werde ich mein ganzes Leben lang bleiben, verliebt in wechselhafte Horizonte, in noch unerforschte Fernen, denn jede Reise, und mag sie uns in noch so überlaufene, noch so bekannte Gegenden führen, ist eine Erforschung", notiert Isabelle Eberhardt am 7. Juli 1902 in ihr Tagebuch. Da war sie längst unterwegs, in der Wüste, dort wo die Nomaden leben, in der algerischen Sahara. Sie trägt Burnus und Turban und gibt sich als "Si Mahmoud" oder "Mahmoud Saadi" aus. Auf diese Weise steht ihr die Welt der Männer offen. Sie kann mit ihnen rauchen, trinken, kiffen. Erforschen will sie nicht nur die Ferne, sondern auch ihre Seele. "Mein Körper ist im Abendland und meine Seele im Orient. Mein Körper im Land der Ungläubigen, und mein Herz ist in Stambul …", schrieb sie 1895 an ihren Bruder August. Zwei Jahre später reiste sie nach Algerien und trat zum Islam über. Die islamisierte Russin im Männergewand erregte das Misstrauen der französischen Besatzer, nicht zuletzt wegen ihrer Beziehung zu einem algerischen Soldaten. Man verwies sie des Landes. 1901, von Marseille aus, betrieb sie ihre Rückkehr, zermartert von Sehnsucht nach der Wüste … Ihre Tagebuchblätter von 1900 bis 1903 zeigen eine junge Frau auf der Suche nach einer neuen Identität, einer neuen Intensität, nach Ekstase – und in dem mühevollen Versuch, sich von den quälenden Erinnerungen an die Tragödien in ihrer Familie zu lösen, die sie noch immer begleiten.
