Wir leben in einer Zeit, in welcher das historische Christentum nicht nur in Nebenpunkten, sondern in seinen Prinzipien und Grundsätzen der rücksichtslosesten Kritik ausgesetzt ist. Nicht gering ist sogar die Zahl derer, welche das Christentum als einen veralteten, überwundenen Standpunkt ansehen, und entweder eine materialistische oder pantheistische Weltanschauung an seine Stelle setzen, oder zu einer anderen Religion, heidnischen Ursprungs, oder eigener Konzeption ihre Zuflucht nehmen oder aber eine derartige Weiterbildung der christlichen Religion für notwendig erachten, dass ihr ursprüngliches Wesen ganz und gar verloren geht. Wie bedenklich es aber auch nach vieler Meinung mit der Sache des Christentums zu sein scheint, tatsächlich ist dies noch lange nicht der Fall. Das Christentum hat schwerere Stürme als die der jetzigen Zeit durchgemacht und bietet auch diesen freudigen Mutes die Stirn. Es lohnt sich deshalb der Versuch, nach allen Seiten hin klar zu machen, dass die neueren Weltanschauungen, die man an die Stelle des Christentums einzuführen sucht, zur Erklärung der Welt und des Lebens nicht ausreichen, und dass alle unsere Einrichtungen, wie Ehe, Familie, Staat und Gesellschaft und alle unsere Kulturgüter, Wissenschaft und Kunst, Recht, Sittlichkeit und Religion gerade auf denselben Voraussetzungen ruhen, auf denen das Christentum aufgebaut ist. Nicht nur die Seele des Menschen, wie Tertullian sagt, sondern auch die Seele der ganzen Welt und der ganzen Kultur ist naturaliter christiana. Die Entwicklung dieses Gedankens bildet den Inhalt dieser Rede. Möge sie deshalb auch in Deutschland ein offenes Ohr finden.

Este volumen presenta el núcleo del pensamiento de Bavinck. Ofrece material explicativo y pone a disposición de un amplio público parte de la mejor teología reformada holandesa jamás escrita. Bavinck, al igual que Calvino, deseaba y enseñaba la necesidad de vivir para la gloria de Dios en todos los aspectos de la vida. Algunas palabras de Miguel Nuñez, Doctor, teólogo y pastor "Probablemente, en el mundo hispanohablante muchos no estén familiarizados con la vida y obra de Herman Bavinck (1854-1921), ni como pensador, ni como teólogo de la tradición reformada. Su importancia es tal que J. I. Packer escribió, como endoso de su teología completa en 4 volúmenes, lo siguiente: "Al igual que Agustín, Calvino y Edwards, Bavink fue un hombre con una mente gigante, de vasto conocimiento, de sabiduría incalculable y de gran capacidad expositiva". Esas son palabras mayores, sobre todo cuando vienen de otro teólogo de tanto peso. En su tiempo, Bavinck fue considerado como una de las mentes más privilegiadas, distinguiéndose no solo por su brillantez intelectual, sino también por su humildad, que le permitió interactuar con aquellos que diferían de él, siempre con respeto y representando sus ideas en el debate de manera balanceada y justa. De hecho, supo sostener amistades de calidad con pensadores y teólogos de otras tradiciones religiosas sin nunca comprometer la ortodoxia de la fe cristiana. Eso habla de su seguridad en Cristo,no sacudida por lo que otros pudieran pensar, ni tampoco molestada por ideas contrarias a sus convicciones. Su conocimiento de las Escrituras, su discernimiento espiritual, pero especialmente su entendimiento del Dios Trino sostuvieron su fe y su caminar de manera íntegra. Su actitud ante sus opositores es digna de imitar y sirve de espejo al espíritu contencioso de nuestros días dentro y fuera de la iglesia de Cristo."
