Einige Zeit hindurch war Mr. Parham dem Gedanken, einer spiritistischen Sitzung beizuwohnen, wozu Sir Bussy Woodcock ihn aufgefordert hatte, in stärkstem Maße abgeneigt. Mr. Parham wollte mit Spiritismus nichts zu schaffen haben. Gleichzeitig aber wollte er seine Beziehungen zu Sir Bussy Woodcock nicht lockern. Sir Bussy Woodcock war einer jener ungebildeten Plutokraten, deren Umgang Männer von überragender Intelligenz heutzutage pflegen müssen, wenn sie nur den geringsten Ehrgeiz in sich verspüren, beim Schauspiel des Lebens mehr zu sein als bloße Zuschauer. Reiche Abenteuer solcher Art sind unter den heutigen Bedingungen die notwendigen Vermittler zwischen edlem Denken und gemeiner Wirklichkeit. Die Notwendigkeit einer so schwierigen und dabei so entwürdigenden Vermittlung ist bedauerlich, doch scheint sie in dieser unerklärlichen Welt nun einmal zu bestehen. Der Denker und der Mann der Tat sind einander nötig – zumindest scheint der Denker ihres Zusammenwirkens zu bedürfen. Sowohl Plato wie auch Konfuzius oder Machiavelli mußten sich einen Fürsten suchen. Heutzutage, da Fürsten auf schwachen Beinen stehen, müssen Denker sich an reiche Leute halten. Es ist schwer, reiche Leute zu finden, die für geistige Bestrebungen etwas übrig haben, und hat man sie gefunden, so sind sie zumeist recht störrisch. An Sir Bussy zum Beispiel gab es so manches, was ein Mensch von hoher Geistigkeit kaum ertragen hätte, wenn ihm nicht die wunderbarste Selbstbeherrschung eigen gewesen wäre. Sir Bussy war ein kleiner Mann mit rotem, sommersprossigem Gesicht, einer hochgestülpten Nase, wie man sie heute so häufig findet, und einem Mund, der einer aufs Geratewohl ins Gesicht gesetzten Schmarre glich; er war untersetzt, was einen Menschen von hohem, schlankem Wuchs an und für sich schon unangenehm berühren muß, und er bewegte sich mit einer Lebhaftigkeit und Hast, die einem oft auf die Nerven fiel und jederzeit bewies, daß Sir Bussy gewisse, einem kultivierten Geiste unerläßliche …

Der Zeitreisende (denn so werde ich am besten von ihm reden) setzte uns eine geheimnisvolle Sache auseinander. Seine grauen Augen leuchteten und zwinkerten, und sein meist blasses Gesicht war gerötet und belebt. Unsere Stühle – von ihm erfundene Patente – umarmten und liebkosten sich eher, als dass sie auf sich sitzen ließen, und es herrschte jene üppige Nach-Tisch-Atmosphäre, da die Gedanken anmutig und frei von den Fesseln der Präzision hinlaufen. Und er stellte es folgendermaßen dar – indem er einzelnen Punkten mit einem hageren Zeigefinger Nachdruck verlieh – während wir dasaßen und träge seinen Ernst bei diesem neuen Paradoxon (wofür wir es hielten) und seine Fruchtbarkeit bewunderten.

Dos científicos despistados, Redwood y Bensington, con una misión en común: encontrar el alimento perfecto, la "Heracleoforbia", que aumenta el tamaño de las criaturas que lo ingieren. Así nos encontramos con un escenario en que los pollos se vuelven tan grandes que se comen a los gatos, las ratas y avispas gigantes a los humanos, las plantas venenosas crecen tanto que resultan letales...Como consecuencia, los bebés a los que acaba llegando este alimento se convierten en criaturas gigantes que se enfrentarán en una lucha a los "pequeños" humanos. El conflicto está servido, y su desenlace es incierto, aunque probablemente trágico en cualquier caso. Son historias entrelazadas a lo largo de los continentes y los siglos, con cambios de tono (la primera parte podría ser el escenario de una película de terror, cuando las ratas salen a aterrorizar a los pueblerinos de la campiña inglesa, la segunda tiene un tono de fábula con una crítica despiadada a la sociedad inglesa del momento, mientras la tercera ocurre veinte años después con los cambios que ha traído este invento).Una vez más Wells demostró ser un visionario que ya a principios del siglo XX se adelantaba al conflicto ético y moral que en nuestros días, más de cien años después, está suscitando el debate sobre la modificación genética o los alimentos transgénicos. Y nos deja su habitual invitación a la reflexión acerca de la ética en los avances científicos y la moraleja: el hombre no debería jugar a ser Dios, ya que por muy noble que sea el propósito, la ejecución siempre es llevada a cabo por hombres que tienen los defectos propios de la especie humana y por tanto el resultado puede ser catastrófico.Adaptada al cine en 1976 por Bert L. Gordon, el resultado fue una película de serie B más bien mediocre que además prescindía de la parte más importante del relato y se centraba en un discurso ecologista característico de la época.-
