This is a good old murder mystery, full of ghosts and everything else, and it will definitely keep the reader on the edge of their place. Terry is a really funny character. He is definitely the youngest of the two protagonists, and he is ready to prove himself, to do his best when he is disguised or on the trail, some crazy adventure – a spontaneous reporter – we need more these days.

It was through the Patterson-Pratt forgery case that I first made the acquaintance of Terry Patten, and at the time I should have been more than willing to forego the pleasure. Our firm rarely dealt with criminal cases, but the Patterson family were long standing clients, and they naturally turned to us when the trouble came. Ordinarily, so important a matter would have been put in the hands of one of the older men, but it happened that I was the one who had drawn up the will for Patterson Senior the night before his suicide, therefore the brunt of the work devolved upon me. The most unpleasant part of the whole affair was the notoriety. Could we have kept it from the papers, it would not have been so bad, but that was a physical impossibility; Terry Patten was on our track, and within a week he had brought down upon us every newspaper in New York.

In this novel a study is presented of a common enough American experience, but from a new point of view. Copley, the wheat king, has cornered the American supply of wheat. His daughter Marcia, who is in Italy, is forced to see the people starving and rebellious because her father's maneuvers in the market have raised the price of daily bread. Her uncle, with whom she is living, endeavors to lighten the suffering which his brother has caused by distributing money among the starving Italians; but his generosity is misunderstood, and his niece is hooted and almost mobbed in the street as the "Wheat princess," who is helping to grind the faces of the poor. Lawrence Sybert, the secretary of the American legation at Rome, appears as the man of mystery both protecting and reproving the people. Of course, there are other characters, many of them, but they amount to little in the general current of the story, which is strong, graphic, and truthful.

When Patty Went to College Jean Webster - When Patty Went to College is Jean Webster's first novel, published in 1903. It is a humorous look at life in a women's college at the turn of the 20th century. Patty Wyatt, the protagonist of this story is a bright, fun-loving, imperturbable young woman who does not like to conform. The book describes her many escapades on campus during her senior year at college. Patty enjoys life on campus and uses her energies in playing pranks and for the entertainment of herself and her friends. An intelligent young woman, she uses creative methods to study only as much as she feels necessary. Patty is, however, a believer in causes and a champion of the weak. She goes out of her way to help a homesick freshman, Olivia Copeland, who believes she will be sent home when she fails three subjects in the examination. The end of the book sees Patty reflecting on what her life after college might be like. She plays hooky from chapel and meets a bishop. In a chat with the bishop, Patty realizes that being irresponsible and evasive at a young age could adversely affect her character as an adult and decides to try to be a more responsible person. This is Jean Webster's earliest published work, and not as popular as her better-known novels Daddy-Long-Legs (1912) and Dear Enemy (1915). Webster later wrote Just Patty (1911), which describes Patty's school days, and predates this story by around five years.

Never before has that subtle and much-abused thing known as " college atmosphere" been so well transferred into type as in this book, the happy-go-lucky irresponsibility, tempered by a vein of conscientiousness, inconsistent and bewildering, that makes the ordinary undergraduate an inexplicable puzzle to the outsider. Miss Patty Wyatt, who furnishes the foreground for the fifteen stories contained in the book, amply exemplifies this bewildering many sidedness. She is ever just in or just out of difficulty, and yet her fun is managed with such frankness and open audacity and such freedom from malice that it always leaves a pleasant taste behind. The book is deeply interesting and thoroughly readable. In fact, it deserves a second reading as well as a first, so natural and spontaneous is its charm.
