He, his nephew Axel, and their guide Hans descend into the Icelandic volcano Snæfellsjokull, encountering many adventures, including prehistoric animals and natural hazards, before eventually coming to the surface again in southern Italy, at the Stromboli volcano. The genre of subterranean fiction already existed long before Verne. However, the present book considerably added to its popularity and influenced later such writings. For example, Edgar Rice Burroughs explicitly acknowledged Verne's influence on his own Pellucidar series. The book was inspired by Charles Lyell's Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man of 1863 (and probably also influenced by Lyell's earlier ground-breaking work Principles of Geology, published 1830–33). By that time geologists had abandoned a literal biblical account of Earth's development and it was generally thought that the end of the last glacial period marked the first appearance of humanity, but Lyell drew on new findings to put the origin of human beings much further back in the deep geological past. Lyell's book also influenced Louis Figuier's 1867 second edition of La Terre avant le déluge ("The Earth before the flood") which included dramatic illustrations of savage men and women wearing animal skins and wielding stone axes, in place of the Garden of Eden shown in the 1863 edition.

He, his nephew Axel, and their Icelandic guide Hans rappel into Iceland's celebrated inactive volcano Snæfellsjökull, then contend with many dangers, including cave-ins, subpolar tornadoes, an underground ocean, and living prehistoric creatures from the Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras (the 1867 revised edition inserted additional prehistoric material in Chaps. 37–39). Eventually the three explorers are spewed back to the surface by an active volcano, Stromboli, located in southern Italy.

The story begins in May 1863, in the Lidenbrock house in Hamburg, Germany, with Professor Lidenbrock rushing home to peruse his latest purchase, an original runic manuscript of an Icelandic saga written by Snorri Sturluson (Snorre Tarleson in some versions of the story), "Heimskringla"; the chronicle of the Norwegian kings who ruled over Iceland. While looking through the book, Lidenbrock and his nephew Axel find a coded note written in runic script along with the name of a 16th-century Icelandic alchemist, Arne Saknussemm. (This was a first indication of Verne's love for cryptography. Coded, cryptic, or incomplete messages as a plot device would continue to appear in many of his works and in each case Verne would go a long way to explain not only the code used but also the mechanisms used to retrieve the original text.) Lidenbrock and Axel transliterate the runic characters into Latin letters, revealing a message written in a seemingly bizarre code. Lidenbrock attempts a decipherment, deducing the message to be a kind of transposition cipher; but his results are as meaningless as the original. Explorers in a hot-air balloon land on an island, figuring that they must be the only inhabitants. Setting off in search of who might have left the chest, the travelers make their way through the Mercy River to the sea. During their trek, the men find remnants of the balloon they arrived in. Back at camp (Granite House) they find their ladder to the house has been removed--by invading orangutans. Soon the animals are defeated, except for one, whom they tame to become a house servant. The men construct a bridge over the river. They protect their abode by surrounding it on all sides with water. They undertake projects to make their colony habitable and comfortable.

The whaling schooner with an incomplete crew returns to America, after not very successful trades. On board is the owner’s wife with the child, their cousin Benedict, an analogue of Paganel and Jung Dick Send, fifteen turbulent years. Next comes the rescue of blacks from an abandoned flooded ship and a bloody scene of a whale hunt. This episode, although it did not greatly excite me as a child, having been forgotten, now seemed completely disgusting, especially the realization that the whalers had attacked a nursing mother with a kitten, who now also became doomed to die, but was already starving to death.

Der Roman wurde erstmals 1872 von dem Verleger Pierre-Jules Hetzel veröffentlicht. Die erste deutschsprachige Ausgabe erschien 1875. Eine englisch-russische Kommission macht sich im Jahre 1854 auf, um in der Kapkolonie Südafrikas in achtzehnmonatiger Arbeit einen Meridiankreis zu messen. Zu gleichen Teilen besteht die Gruppe aus den drei englischen Astronomen Colonel Everest, William Emery und Sir John Murray sowie den drei russischen Astronomen Matthias Strux, Nikolaus Palander und Michael Zorn sowie einem neutralen französischen Wissenschaftler. Begleitet werden diese von einem wackeren Buschmann namens Mokum. Ihr Ziel ist es, Vermessungen durchzuführen, die der exakten Bestimmung des Meters dienen. Im Verlauf des Romans geschieht es, dass die beiden Anführer der Gruppe, Everest und Strux, aus nationalen Unterschieden und aus Gelehrtenneid ständig aneinandergeraten. Als die Expeditionsteilnehmer erfahren, dass es 1854 zum Ausbruch des Krimkrieges gekommen ist, trennt sich die Gruppe aus ebendiesen nationalen Differenzen, um separat ihre Vermessungsarbeiten weiter fortzusetzen. Im Angesicht einer Gefahr, die von einem einheimischen Stamm, den Makololos, ausgeht, schaffen es die russischen und englischen Wissenschaftler jedoch, über ihre nationalen Differenzen hinwegzusehen, und vereinen sich erneut, um ihre Forschungsarbeit gemeinsam zu beenden.
