O Pioneers! / Willa Cather. - [miejsce nieznane] : KtoCzyta.pl : Legimi, 2023.
Forma i typ
An American classic about Swedish immigrants in the Midwest. There lived in Nebraska a clever and beautiful woman named Alexandra Bergson, and she had three brothers. The older ones were greedy self-satisfied people, the younger one was a spoiled egoist, and she devoted her whole life to making sure they had a good life. I thought only about crops, livestock and land plots, but I didn’t think about myself – for the time being

In 'One of Ours', Willa Cather explores the themes of love, war, and belonging through the eyes of Claude Wheeler, a young man torn between his rural roots in Nebraska and his desire for adventure in World War I. Cather's prose flows seamlessly, vividly painting the landscapes of both rural America and war-torn Europe. The novel delves into the complexities of identity and purpose, making it a timeless exploration of human experience. 'Alexander's Bridge', on the other hand, tells the story of Bartley Alexander, a successful engineer grappling with personal and professional struggles. Cather's precise language and keen observations lend a nuanced understanding of the human condition. Both novels showcase Cather's mastery of storytelling and her ability to capture the nuances of life. Willa Cather, known for her lyrical prose and keen sense of place, drew inspiration from her own experiences growing up in rural Nebraska. Her deep connection to the land and its people shines through in her works, making her a celebrated figure in American literature. I recommend 'One of Ours' and 'Alexander's Bridge' to readers who appreciate richly nuanced narratives and profound explorations of the human spirit.

The action takes place in Virginia five years before the Civil War. The story shows the impact of slavery on Saphira Colbert, a woman of spirit and common sense who is frighteningly capricious in dealing with the people she „owns”. The heroine Sapphira lacks moral qualities, she does not cause sympathy. However, the book was critically acclaimed and was a commercial success.

Sapphira and the Slave Girl Willa Cather - Set on the Nebraska prairie where Willa Cather (18731947) grew up, this powerful early novel tells the story of the young Alexandra Bergson, whose dying father leaves her in charge of the family and of the lands they have struggled to farm. In Alexandra's long flight to survive and succeed, O Pioneers!relates an important chapter in the history of the American frontier.Evoking the harsh grandeur of the prairie, this landmark of American fiction unfurls a saga of love, greed, murder, failed dreams, and hard-won triumph. In the fateful interaction of her characters, Willa Cather compares with keen insight the experiences of Swedish, French, and Bohemian immigrants in the United States. And in her absorbing narrative, she displays the virtuoso storytelling skills that have made her one of the most admired masters of the American novel. Sapphira and the Slave Girl is Willa Cather's last novel, published in 1940.The story of Sapphira Dodderidge Colbert, a bitter but privileged white woman, who becomes irrationally jealous of Nancy, a beautiful young slave. The book balances an atmospheric portrait of antebellum Virginia against an unblinking view of the lives of Sapphira's slaves. In this story I have called several of the characters by Frederick County surnames, but in no case have I used the name of a person whom I ever knew or saw. My father and mother, when they came home from Winchester or Capon Springs, often talked about acquaintances whom they had met. The names of those unknown persons sometimes had a lively fascination for me, merely as names: Mr. Haymaker, Mr. Bywaters, Mr. Householder, Mr. Tidball, Miss Snap. For some reason I found the name of Mr. Pertleball especially delightful, though I never saw the man who bore it, and to this day I don't know how to spell it.

Black Creek Valley, Virginia, 1856.

The Professor's House Willa Cather - The Professor's House is a novel by American novelist Willa Cather. Published in 1925, the novel was written over the course of several years. Cather first wrote the centerpiece,Tom Outland's Story, and then later wrote the two framing chapters The Family and The Professor.Willa Cather's lyrical and bittersweet novel of a middle-aged man losing control of his life is a brilliant study in emotional dislocation and renewal.Professor Godfrey St. Peter is a man in his fifties who has devoted his life to his work, his wife, his garden, and his daughters, and achieved success with all of them. But when St. Peter is called on to move to a new, more comfortable house, something in him rebels. And although at first that rebellion consists of nothing more than mild resistance to his family's wishes, it imperceptibly comes to encompass the entire order of his life. The Professor's House combines a delightful grasp of the social and domestic rituals of a Midwestern university town in the 1920s with profound spiritual and psychological introspectio

The Song of the Lark is the third novel by American author Willa Cather, written in 1915. It is generally considered to be the second novel in Cather's Prairie Trilogy, following O Pioneers! (1913) and preceding My Ántonia (1918). The book tells the story of a talented artist born in a small town in Colorado who discovers and develops her singing voice. Her story is told against the backdrop of the burgeoning American West in which she was born in a town along the rail line, of fast-growing Chicago near the turn of the twentieth century, and of the audience for singers of her skills in the US compared to Europe. Thea Kronborg grows up, learning herself, her strengths and her talent, until she reaches success. The title comes from a painting of the same name by Jules Breton in 1884 and part of the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Set in the 1890s in Moonstone, a fictional town in Colorado, The Song of the Lark is the self-portrait of an artist in the making. The ambitious young heroine, Thea Kronborg leaves her hometown to go to Chicago to fulfill her dream of becoming a well-trained pianist, a better piano teacher. When her instructor hears her voice, he realizes that this is her true artistic gift. He encourages her to pursue her vocal training instead of piano saying ... "your voice is worth all that you can put into it. I have not come to this decision rashly." [Part II; Chapter 7] In that pursuit she travels to Dresden, then to New York City, singing operas. Her reference for life is always her home town and the people she encountered there. The novel captures Thea's independent-mindedness, her strong work ethic, and her ascent to her highest achievement. At each step along the way, her realization of the mediocrity of her peers propels her to greater levels of accomplishment, but in the course of her ascent she must discard those relationships which no longer serve her.

The Song of the Lark Willa Cather - The Song of the Lark is a 1915 novel by Willa Cather. It is the second part of a thematic trilogy by Cather which tells stories of women in the emerging prairies of the American West. The trilogy is considered to be some of Cathers finest work, celebrated for bringing to life the rural West and its people in a way that had never been done before. The book follows the life of Thea Kronborg as she grows up in a small American prairie town and follows her ambition to be an internationally renowned singer. Theas story is a combination of Cathers own autobiographical experiences growing up in Nebraska and the life of a famous Scandinavian-American opera singer named Olive Fremstad. The novel is divided into six parts. The first one recounts Theas childhood in the fictional town of Moonstone, Colorado. When the book starts, she is eleven years old. She is the daughter of the local minister and has a reputation for being different and aloof. Though the adults in her family, particularly her mother and eccentric Aunt Tillie, are supportive of her, she has trouble getting along with her siblings and other children. She takes daily piano lessons for two to four hours a day.Her friends are all older men in the town: her piano teacher Herr Wunsch, a drunk out-of-towner who stays with the local tailor Mr. Kohler and his wife; the local physician Dr. Archie, who once saved her life when she had pneumonia as a child; Spanish Johnny, a Mexican wandering musician who lives in the Mexican Town outside of Moonstone; and Ray Kennedy, a train conductor who dotes on Thea and is waiting for her to grow older so he can marry her.One day, Thea plays piano at a concert in her local church and gets upset when her rival is praised above her. She continues to train with Wunsch, who first introduces her to opera. When Wunsch causes a scandal by getting drunk and wrecking Kohlers home, his students no longer want to be associated with him and he leaves town. At the young age of fifteen, Thea takes on Wunschs piano students as a full-time teacher, dropping out of school.
