A captivating feminist classic about a woman's struggle for independence in fascist Italy, from the author of Forbidden Notebook - with an afterword by Elena Ferrante __________ 'Reading Alba de Céspedes was, for me, like breaking into an unknown universe: social class, feelings, atmosphere' Annie Ernaux 'One of Italy's most cosmopolitan, incendiary, insightful, and overlooked writers' Jhumpa Lahiri 'Alba de Céspedes wrote novels in the 1940s and 1950s that were radically contemporary, both then and now... A courageous novel, beautifully imagined and written' Washington Post __________ Alessandra has always wanted more than life offered her. Growing up in a crowded apartment block in 1930s Rome, she watches as her mother's dreams of becoming a concert pianist are stifled by an unsatisfying marriage. When her father's traditional family try to make Alessandra marry at a young age, she rebels against the future they imagine for her. Soon she falls passionately in love with Francesco, an anti-fascist professor, and a new world seems to open up. Working for the underground resistance, she tastes the independence that she has yearned for. But what will it take for her to break free from society's expectations, and live on her own terms? Drawing on Alba de Céspedes's own experiences in Italy's wartime uprising, Her Side of the Story is a feminist chronicle of fierce and unforgettable power.

Hidden Faces / Salvador Dalí. - [miejsce nieznane] : Pushkin Press : Legimi, 2024.
Forma i typ
The only novel of the twentieth century's most acclaimed surrealist painter, a richly visual depiction of a group of eccentric aristocrats in the years preceding the Second World War __________ 'Start the first page and you are in the presence of an old-fashioned baroque novel, intelligent, extravagant, as photographically precise as his paintings' P. J. Kavanagh, Guardian 'So full of visual invention, so witty, so charged with an almost Dickensian energy that it's difficult not to accept the author's own arrogant valuation of himself as a genius' Observer 'What really strikes the reader is the abounding physical detail of objects, light, spaces, and materials' The Times __________ In swirling, surreal prose, the iconic artist Salvador Dalí portrays the intrigues and love affairs of a group of eccentric aristocrats who, in their luxury and extravagance, symbolize decadent Europe in the 1930s. In the shadow of encroaching war, their tangled lives provide a thrilling vehicle for Dalí's uniquely spirited imagination and artistic vision.

Hints on Etiquette / Various. - [miejsce nieznane] : Pushkin Press : Legimi, 2016.
Autor
Forma i typ
A book of dining, flirting, dancing and smoking, celebrating the 175th anniversary of The London Library If these 'hints' save the blush but upon one cheek, or smooth the path into 'society' of only one honest family, the object of the author will be attained As the Industrial Revolution spread wealth and work around Britain, a stronger and more influential middle class began to arise. And with it came a rise in social anxiety. For while nineteenth-century fashions were constantly changing, the importance of the baffling social codes was entirely rigid, and a newly prosperous and bewildered middle class was in dire need of careful guidance and advice. And so rulebooks such as Hints on Etiquette began to emerge, aiming to demystify the byzantine laws governing behaviour and social interaction. Many of these pieces of advice might seem dated in the 21st century, but the popularity of Downton Abbey, the existence of hereditary peers and a fascination with the royal family are proof that the class system of Victorian Britain still casts its shadow today... Hints on Etiquette is part of "Found on the Shelves", published with The London Library. The books in this series have been chosen to give a fascinating insight into the treasures that can be found while browsing in The London Library. Now celebrating its 175th anniversary, with over seventeen miles of shelving and more than a million books, The London Library has become an unrivalled archive of the modes, manners and thoughts of each generation which has helped to form it.

Hunger / Lan Samantha Chang. - [miejsce nieznane] : Pushkin Press : Legimi, 2023.
Forma i typ
'A work of gorgeous, enduring prose' Washington Post 'Luminously elegiac stories… Complex and rueful… gives voice to internal struggles, catalogues of loss' New York Times Book Review A modern classic of American fiction: a haunting collection of stories that explore the lost loves and complex desires of Chinese-American immigrant families The novella and five stories that make up this collection tell of displaced lives, and exiled imaginations. Far away from their ancestral home, a grandmother tells her granddaughters stories of their river ancestors. Having relocated to the American Midwest, a young couple purposefully drive all remnants of their lives in China into the shadows. In the title novella, a woman recounts her tragic marriage to an exiled musician, whose own disappointments nearly destroy their two daughters. In exquisitely crisp, spare and subtle prose, Lan Samantha Chang untangles how an immigrant can hunger for love, for acceptance, and for what they have left behind. An undeniable classic of modern American literature, Hunger is a haunting collection of stories, suffused with quiet beauty and longing. Part of the Pushkin Press Classics series: timeless storytelling by icons of literature, hand-picked from around the globe Lan Samantha Chang is the author of the award-winning books Hunger and Inheritance, and the novel All Is Forgotten, Nothing Is Lost. Her work has been translated into nine languages and has been chosen twice for The Best American Short Stories. A recent Berlin Prize winner, she has received creative writing fellowships from Stanford University, the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Samantha lives in Iowa City, where she is director of the Iowa Writers' Workshop. Her most recent novel, The Family Chao, is also published by Pushkin Press and was one of Barack Obama's Books of Summer 2022.

In Love / Alfred Hayes. - [miejsce nieznane] : Pushkin Press : Legimi, 2024.
Forma i typ
An exquisite depiction of a doomed love affair, set in noirish 1950s New York __________ 'A little masterpiece' Elizabeth Bowen 'Moving and convincing ... a lyrical, intelligent book' Guardian 'My favorite of the Hayes novels... I have read and reread this small book as though it were a poem rather than a fiction: not a description of experience but the thing itself' Vivian Gornick, New York Review of Books __________ In a Manhattan bar, a middle-aged man tells a young woman of his love affair with a lonely divorcee; of how one night she was offered one thousand dollars to sleep with a stranger; and of how he and she would subsequently betray each other in turn. In Love is an indictment of, and an elegy to, a love affair that was doomed from the start; an exquisitely honest and painful depiction of heartbreak.

The gripping and elegiac stories of eight lost books, and the mysterious circumstances behind their disappearancesThey exist as a rumour or a fading memory. They vanished from history leaving scarcely a trace, lost to fire, censorship, theft, war or deliberate destruction. Yet those who seek them are convinced they will find them. This is the story of one man's quest for eight mysterious lost books.Taking us from Florence to Regency London, the Russian Steppe to British Columbia, Giorgio van Straten unearths stories of infamy and tragedy, glimmers of hope and bitter twists of fate. There are, among others, the rediscovered masterpiece that he read but failed to save from destruction; the Hemingway novel that vanished in a suitcase at the Gare de Lyon; the memoirs of Lord Byron, burnt to avoid a scandal; the Magnum Opus of Bruno Schulz, disappeared along with its author in wartime Poland; the mythical Sylvia Plath novel that may one day become reality. As gripping as a detective novel, as moving as an elegy, this is the tale of a love affair with the impossible, of the things that slip away from us but which, sometimes, live again in the stories we tell.Giorgio van Straten is director of the Italian Cultural Institute of New York and one of the editors of the literature review Nuovi Argomenti. He is the author of several novels, including the prize-winning My Name a Living Memory, along with two collections of short stories. He has translated the works of authors such as Kipling, London and Stevenson and has edited several works of non-fiction.

In Search of the Essence of Place is a memoir of Petr Král's experiences growing up in post-war Czechoslovakia and subsequent years in Paris. Armed only with his poetic sensibility, Král sets out to explore our relationship with the places that we inhabit and with the apparently unremarkable everyday objects, which often inform and enrich our lives. Král bears witness to Flaubert's observation that "in order for something to become interesting, we simply have to look at it for a long time". He reveals not only the inner life - the very essence - of mundane objects and places, but also simple yet profound truths about ourselves.

Death in paradise: sea, sex and a sinister downward spiral on a Caribbean islandThe young intellectuals J. and Elena abandon the parties, the drinking and the money of the city, and start a new life on a remote tropical coast. Among mango trees, hot sands and everlasting sunshine, they plan to live the Good Life, self-sufficient and close to nature. But with each day come small defeats and imperceptible dramas. Gradually paradise turns into hell, as brutal weather, mounting debts, the couple's brittle relationship, and the sea itself threaten to destroy them.Based on a true story, In the Beginning Was the Sea is a dramatic and searingly ironic account of the disastrous encounter of the imagined life with reality - a satire of hippyism, ecological fantasies, and of the very idea that man can control fate.Tomás Gonzáles was born in 1950 in Medellín, Colombia. He studied Philosophy before becoming a barman in a Bogotá nightclub, whose owner published In the Beginning Was the Sea, his first novel, in 1983. González has lived in Miami and New York, where he wrote much of his work while making a living as a translator. After twenty years in the US, he returned to Colombia, where he now lives. His books have been translated into six languages. In the Beginning Was the Sea is González's first book to be published in English.

Revised and updated reissue of an enthralling, intimate biography of Isaiah Berlin, major intellectual figure and remarkable witness to the crises of the twentieth century "Reading Ignatieff's Isaiah Berlin, you feel you are understanding not only Isaiah Berlin, but the history... I do not see how there could be a more insightful, more erudite, biography of this remarkable man" The Times Literary Supplement "A work of literature and an eloquent portrait... Though Berlin will be the subject of many future studies, one cannot imagine anyone feeling the need to improve on this biography" Observer "Enthralling... An affectionate and admiring, but none the less independently-minded portrait... A serious book, but also a vivid, lively and uplifting one" Evening Standard Isaiah Berlin was one of the great public intellectuals of his time. A magnetic speaker and beacon of liberal philosophy, he gained first-hand experience of some of the pivotal events of the twentieth century and crossed paths with luminaries from Virginia Woolf to Sigmund Freud. Declining to write an autobiography, Berlin instead agreed to give extensive interviews to acclaimed writer Michael Ignatieff in the final decade of his life. The result is a magisterial biography that penetrates deeply into Berlin's life and thought while capturing his vivid style of conversation. Reissued in this updated edition, it traces Berlin's journey to become one of his era's most vigorous defenders of liberty and individuality in the face of tyranny and dogma.

A delightful and essential compendium of words, new, old or abused through Brexit. BLUNDER. To mistake grossly, to err very widely. 'Someone had blundered' (Alfred, Lord Tennyson, 'Charge of the Brexit Brigade') EUTHANASIA. An easy death. Strangulation by EU regulations, according to Brexiteers. 'Brexit' seems to mean many things, but none of them is clear. Fortunately, help is at hand from Harry Eyres and George Myerson, who offer us pithy and incisive definitions of the key terms associated with this momentous process. From 'COCK-UP' to 'WRETCHED' via 'BUFFOON' and 'MAY', Johnson's Brexit Dictionary is a delightful, witty and essential compendium inspired by Dr Johnson's original, and updated for our turbulent times.

Reissue of one of the twentieth century's finest literary memoirs: the sweeping, candidly told story of a life in writing and politics by the writer Storm Jameson, with an introduction by Vivian Gornick __________ 'When Storm Jameson set out to write a memoir, the door of her safe opened wide, and she found literary gold in it' Vivian Gornick 'Has the total honesty of the best autobiography' Guardian 'Stops you in your tracks. I would like to persuade everyone to read it' Sunday Times __________ Towards the end of her life, the writer Storm Jameson began her memoir by asking, 'can I make sense of my life?' This question propelled her through an extraordinary reckoning with how she had lived: her early years in Whitby, shadowed by her tempestuous, dissatisfied mother; an early, unhappy marriage and repeated flights from settled domesticity; a tenaciously pursued literary career, always dogged by a lack of money; and her lifelong political activism, including as the first female president of English PEN, helping refugees escape Nazi Germany. In a richly ironic, conversational voice, Jameson tells also of the great figures she knew and events she witnessed: encounters with H.G. Wells and Rose Macaulay, travels in Europe as fascism was rising and a 1945 trip to recently liberated Warsaw. Throughout, she casts an unsparing eye on her own motivations and psychology, providing a rigorously candid and lively portrait of her life and times.

Journeys / Zweig Stefan. - [miejsce nieznane] : Pushkin Press : Legimi, 2019.
Forma i typ
A collection of the great writer's observations, made during his travels across the Europe he loved so muchWhen I am on a journey, all ties suddenly fall away. I feel myself quite unburdened, disconnected, free – there is something in it marvellously uplifting and invigorating. Whole past epochs suddenly return: nothing is lost, everything still full of inception, enticement. For the insatiably curious, ardent Europhile Stefan Zweig, travel was both a necessary cultural education and a personal balm for the depression he experienced when rooted in one place for too long. He spent much of his life weaving between the countries of Europe, visiting authors and friends, exploring the continent in the heyday of international rail travel.Comprising a lifetime's observations on Zweig's travels in Europe, this collection can be dipped into or savoured at length, and paints a rich and sensitive picture of Europe before the Second World War.Stefan Zweig was born in 1881 in Vienna, into a wealthy Austrian-Jewish family. He studied in Berlin and Vienna and was first known as a poet and translator, then as a biographer. Between the wars, Zweig was an international bestseller with a string of hugely popular novellas including Letter from an Unknown Woman, Amok and Fear. In 1934, with the rise of Nazism, he left Austria, and lived in London, Bath and New York – a period during which he produced his most celebrated works: his only novel, Beware of Pity, and his memoir, The World of Yesterday. He eventually settled in Brazil, where in 1942 he and his wife were found dead in an apparent double suicide. Much of his work is available from Pushkin Press.

Two daringly original works from the acclaimed Danish author Dorthe Nors, published back to back in a uniquely designed edition. Two works by Dorthe Nors, a collection of short stories and a novella, are brought together for the first time. In Karate Chop, a children's psychologist, lost in self-doubt, examines her believed complicity in her own destruction; a man, obsessed with serial killers, turns to the internet to explore female violence; a mother and daughter travel to the World's End, in hope of finding their peace. In Minna Needs Rehearsal Space, Minna, musician, composer, artist, needs to find space to rehearse - or just space to get away. Away from the realities of life, from the meaningless interactions of our digital age, and from the loneliness of a relationship coming to an end. With stark, simple and stylishly original prose, Dorthe Nors explores the intricacies of modern existence and modern relationships. Reading like an antonym to our digital society, where much is said but little meaning is truly conveyed, Nors's meticulously structured work examines the complexity, and sometimes cruelty, of human psychology and desire. Dorthe Nors was born in 1970 and studied literature and art history at the University of Aarhus. After publishing three novels, she wrote Karate Chop, her collection of short stories, in 2008 and Minna Needs Rehearsal Space in 2013. She has seen her short stories in various publications, including The Boston Review, Harpers and The New Yorker, and has contributed to anthologies in Denmark and Germany. Having international acclaim, she lives in rural Jutland, Denmark.

Late Fame / Arthur Schnitzler. - [miejsce nieznane] : Pushkin Press : Legimi, 2015.
Forma i typ
First English publication of a recently rediscovered novella by one of the greatest European writers One seemingly ordinary evening, Eduard Saxberger arrives home to find the fulfilment of a long-forgotten wish in his sitting room: a visitor has come to tell him that the youth of Vienna have discovered his poetic genius. Saxberger has written nothing for thirty years, yet he now realises that he is more than merely an Unremarkable Civil Servant, after all: a Venerable Poet, for whom Late Fame is inevitable - if, that is, his new acolytes are to be believed… Arthur Schnitzler was one of the most admired, provocative European writers of the twentieth century. The Nazis attempted to burn all of his work, but his archive was miraculously saved, and with it, Late Fame. Never published before, it is a treasure, a perfect satire of literary self-regard and charlatanism. Arthur Schnitzler (b. 1862 in Vienna) was one of the most influential European writers of the twentieth century, perhaps best known here for his novellas Dream Story and Fräulein Else. He qualified as a doctor but was increasingly driven to a career in writing, resulting in several celebrated plays, novellas and novels which explore the great existential subjects of the modern age: relationships, love, sex, ageing and death. Because his work dealt with subjects considered taboo, he frequently attracted the hostility of the authorities, consequently losing his position as Chief Medic in the Reserve Army and being tried for disorderly conduct. Schnitzler was close friends with Stefan Zweig and Sigmund Freud, who both admired him greatly, and a member of the 'Young Vienna' circle of writers who regularly met at a café nicknamed 'Café Megalomania' - the very same clique and café he satirises so deliciously in Late Fame. Schnitzler died in 1931. Pushkin Press also publishes his novellas Fräulein Else, Dying and Casanova's Return to Venice.

Painted by John Singer Sargent and admired by Sarah Bernhardt, Isabella Stewart Gardner was both popular and unconventional. A passionate art collector and philanthropist, she surrounded herself with artists, writers and musicians, who constituted her court in both Boston in Venice. Written between 1879 and 1914, James's letters to her - whom he once described as "a locomotive - with a Pullman car attached" - vary greatly in their subject-matter and tone: by turns affectionate, ironic, gossipy and philosophical, they give us a fresh insight into a man who to this day remains in many ways a mystery.

Forma i typ
A book helping us cope with the pace of life at the turn of the (nineteenth) century, celebrating the 175th anniversary of The London Library Every age has its own special difficulties and dangers. The disease which specially threatens this generation is restlessness, distraction, dissipation of intellectual and moral power. Its consequence is exhaustion and nervous collapse. And its symptom is Hurry At the turn of the (last) century, the world was changing rapidly. Trains were faster, cheaper and more comfortable than ever before. The new craze of bicycling had given men and women unprecedented independence. And the modernisation of telegraphy and the recent invention of the telephone meant that information could be exchanged over huge distances in a mere matter of minutes. And so a disgruntled and discarded older generation took to pamphlets, leaflets and speeches to pass on their wisdom before it was too late. Alarmed but good-natured, didactic but profound, the resulting 'advice to youth' is valuable guidance for anyone troubled by the rush and bustle of the early century's information overload. Life in a Bustle is part of 'Found on the Shelves', published with The London Library. The books in this series have been chosen to give a fascinating insight into the treasures that can be found while browsing in The London Library. Now celebrating its 175th anniversary, with over 17 miles of shelving and more than a million books, The London Library has become an unrivalled archive of the modes, manners and thoughts of each generation which has helped to form it.

'Fantastically moody' SARAH WATERS 'A little masterpiece of suspense-filled gothic fiction… Persuasive and mysterious' FINANCIAL TIMES 'A beautiful, hallucinatory dream of a novel' J.M. MIRO 'Atmospheric… A must-read' i 'Intensely lyrical and powerfully haunting' SUSAN STOKES-CHAPMAN 'Moody and evocative' KIRKUS 'Seductive and unnerving' NAOMI BOOTH __________ There is a beast inside her, a monster. It wants to scream, it wants to tear things apart. 1816. Mary, eighteen years old, is staying in a villa on Lake Geneva with her lover Percy Shelley. She is tormented by his infidelities; haunted by the loss of her baby daughter. Then one evening with friends, as storms rage outside and laudanum stirs their imaginations, Lord Byron challenges everyone to write a ghost story, and something fierce and wild awakens in Mary. Memories surface of the long, strange summer she once spent with a family in Scotland, where she found herself falling in love with the enigmatic Isabella Baxter. She learned tales of mythical beasts, witches and spirits. And she encountered real monsters - both in the rocky wilds, and far, far closer to home... Illuminating the past like a flash of lightning, this brilliant reimagining of the birth of Frankenstein takes us into a feverish world of waking dreams-where grief mingles with desire, and the veil between beauty and horror grows thin.
