This revised guide presents top-class walking routes in Northern Ireland. From rugged mountain peaks to spectacular coastal scenery, from challenging hill walks to shorter woodland and waterside excursions, there is something for everyone. Every part of the region is covered, from the mountains of Mourne to the Giant's Causeway, from Fermanagh's 'lake district' to the rolling Sperrins. Routes vary from two-hour strolls to eight-hour upland challenges. Much thought has gone into making this guide easy to use: each route, prefaced with a quick-reference summary, is illustrated with a clear sketch map; descriptions include detailed access information while points of interest are highlighted – flora and fauna, history, archaeology and folklore. A compact region with huge scenic variety, Northern Ireland is ideal for walking yet is often overlooked. This authoritative guide is changing that, using the author's enthusiasm and knowledge.

'Ireland's heritage is being steadily whittled away by human exploitation, pollution and other aspects of modern development. This could represent a serious loss to the nation.' Irish Government Report, June 1969 Nature in Ireland is disappearing at an alarming rate. Overfishing, industrial-scale farming and pollution have decimated wildlife habitats and populations. In a single lifetime, vast shoals of herring, rivers bursting with salmon, and bogs alive with flocks of curlew and geese have all become folk memories. Coastal and rural communities are struggling to survive; the foundations of our tourism and agricultural sectors are being undermined. The lack of political engagement frequently sees the state in the European Court of Justice for environmental issues. Pádraic Fogarty authoritatively charts how this grim failure to manage our natural resources has impoverished our country. But all is not lost: he also reveals possibilities for the future, describing how we can fill our seas with fish, farm in tune with nature, and create forests that benefit both people and wildlife. He makes a persuasive case for the return of long-lost species like wild boar, cranes and wolves, showing how the interests of the country and its nature can be reconciled. A provocative call to arms, Whittled Away presents an alternative path that could lead us all to a brighter future.

The last King of the Great Blasket Island was Pádraig Ó Catháin, known as Peats Mhicí, who served for quarter of a century until his death in 1929. The King helped the islanders navigate through life and through national as well as international events, such as the 1916 Rising and the Great War. This book tells how he came to be King of the Great Blasket Island and how his personality and integrity shaped the role. This is the first account of the King's extraordinary life, written in collaboration with his descendants in the USA and Ireland. It tells the story of this unique man, his many contributions to the island and his extended legacy. • Also available: From the Great Blasket to America by Michael Carney and The Loneliest Boy in the World by Gearóid Cheaist Ó Catháin

How do we know that what we remember is the truth? Inspired by the story of her relative Marion Stokes, one of three women who raised the tricolour over Enniscorthy in Easter Week 1916, Felicity Hayes-McCoy explores the consequences for all of us when memories are manipulated or obliterated, intentionally or by chance. In the power struggle after the Easter Rising, involving, among others, Michael Collins and Eamon de Valera, the ideals for which Marion and her companions fought were eroded, resulting in an Ireland marked by chauvinism, isolationism and secrecy. By mapping her own family stories onto the history of the State, Felicity examines how Irish life today has been affected by the censorship and mixed messages of the past. Absorbing, entertaining and touching, her story moves from Washerwoman's Hill in Dublin to London and back again, spans two world wars, a revolution, a civil war and the development of a republic, and culminates in Ireland's 2015 same-sex marriage referendum. • Also by this author: Enough is Plenty

An emigrant to England in the 1970s, Felicity Hayes-McCoy knew she'd return to Corca Dhuibhne, Ireland's Dingle peninsula, a place she had fallen in love with at seventeen. Now she and her husband have restored a stone house there, the focus for this chronicle in response to reader requests for an illustrated sequel to her memoir, The House on an Irish Hillside. Enough Is Plenty celebrates the seasonal rhythms in and around the author's house and garden at the western end of Ireland's Dingle Peninsula. It is about ordinary small pleasures, such as the smell of freshly baked soda bread, that can easily go unnoticed, and offers recipes from Felicity's kitchen and information on organic food production and gardening. It views the year from a place where a vibrant 21st-century lifestyle is still marked by Ireland's Celtic past and the ancient rhythms of Samhain (winter), Imbolc (spring), Bealtaine (summer) and Lughnasa (autumn). In this way of life, health and happiness are rooted in awareness of nature and the environment, and nourishment comes from music, friendship and storytelling as well as from good food. * Foreword by Alice Taylor * Also by this author: A Woven Silence

In April 1875, the whaler 'Catalpa' sailed from New Bedford in America, embarking on a hair-raising seafaring mission. Its destination was Fremantle, Western Australia; its goal to rescue six Fenian prisoners from the toughest prison there. The Irishmen, convicted of treason against the British Queen and regarded as traitors, were suffering from hunger, overwork and disease. Fearing they would die, they had pleaded with their comrades in America to be rescued. On Easter Monday 1876, the prisoners made their bid for freedom. But their escape attempt was soon in danger. The alarm was raised and heavily armed soldiers and police were sent in pursuit. Would the prisoners reach safety before they were captured? Was the escape doomed to failure? This is the story of that rescue attempt, a story of courage, endurance and daring, one of the most exciting and thrilling sea stories. By the author of MICHAEL COLLINS: MOST WANTED MAN and TITANIC TRAGEDY.

For almost forty years, Fr Sean McManus has been at the heart of the Irish American campaign to pressurise the British government regarding injustice in Northern Ireland. This is a deeply personal account of how his lone voice mainstreamed Northern Ireland on Capitol Hill, after the Catholic Church removed him from Britain. He became 'Britain's nemesis in America', founding the Irish National Caucus in 1974. Also chronicles the events and social context that influenced him, growing up in a parish divided by the Border.

The Kerry Way is Ireland's longest waymarked trail and one of the most popular. Looping around the Iveragh Peninsula, it follows narrow country roads, forest paths, abandoned coach roads and mass paths, national park land and farmland. This clear and lively guide gives the prospective wayfarer enough information to plan and enjoy every step. It offers a detailed description of the trail plus lively asides on geology, history, folklore, settlement, flora and fauna. Above all, this guide will keep the reader from getting lost. The trail description is broken down into sections from the first step out of Killarney, through the high passes in the MacGillycuddy's Reeks, into the splendour of the Ring of Kerry, and back to Killarney. This guidebook is a light, lively guide to this 200km walk, with enough guidance, cultural background and natural history to ensure the user stays on trackto arrive at their car, hostel or B&B. Hillwalking is one of Ireland's most popular leisure activities today. Rock climbing has developed to a level of technical excellence with crags in almost every county and numerous indoor climbing walls. Irish mountaineers have completed winter ascents in the Alps, scaled the highest Himalayan peaks and other previously unclimbed giants, and explored hitherto unknown valleys. Paddy O'Leary recounts the history of hillwalking and mountaineering in Ireland: from the early activists – some were involved in gunrunning, others died at Gallipoli – until the turn of the millennium, when mountaineering in Ireland was no longer the preserve of the middle class. This history recounts the adventures, dangers, successes and failures which make this multifaceted activity such a fascinating one, and mirrors the spirit of all who love these places. * Also available: The Longest Road by Sean Rothery

In 1962 Seán Ó Sé recorded 'An Poc ar Buile' with Seán Ó Riada and Ceoltóirí Chualann. It proved a huge success and resulted in seven wonderful years working with Ó Riada and over sixty years of singing. Born in 1936, Seán grew up in west Cork not far from where his parents taught at Coomhola Boys' School near Bantry. Following in his parents' footsteps, Seán trained as a teacher and became Principal in Knocknaheeny on Cork city's north side, remaining there until his retirement in 1993. Also recounted is Seán meeting his beloved Eileen, their family life and his struggle with cancer. Throughout it all, he sang. His singing career had taken off in 1959 when he won the traditional singing competition in Feis na Mumhan. It brought him to faraway places he could never have imagined growing up near Ballylickey in west Cork. * Also available: Seán Ó Riada by Tomás Ó Cannain
