Akcja utworu rozgrywa się w Atenach, gdzie książe Tezeusz planuje swój ślub z Hipolitą, królową Amazonek. Jakby tego było mało na scenie pojawia sie także Egeusz, ze sprawą swojej córki, którą chce zeswatać z arystokratą Demetriuszem. Ale Hermia jak na złość, kocha Lizandera. Tezeusz daje jej wybór: wyjdzie za Demetriusza, a jeżeli się nie zgodzi, zostanie skazania na karę śmierci, lub pójdzie do klasztoru. W rezultacie Hermia ucieka z Lizanderem do lasu, gdzie nie obowiązuje ateńskie prawo.

Jednak leśne zacisze nie gwarantuje udanego związku. Tutaj psotny elf Puk opowiada o problemach w relacjach elfickiego króla Oberona i królowej Tytanii. Oberon jest zazdrosny, i kłóci się z królową. Wpada na szalony pomysł - przygotowuje magiczny napój, który niestety dostaje się w niepowołane ręce. To wydarzenie wywołuje lawinę zawiłych następstw, zarówno dla ludzi, jak i elfów. Jakby tego było mało, poddani, przygotowujący sztukę na przyjęcie weselne księcia Tezeusza, fundują czytelnikom nie lada zabawę.
