This third of four volumes of Hospitaller history is believed to be the first in depth treatment of Hospitaller history during the years 1565 to 1623 since Bartolomeo dal Pozzo's Historia della Sacra Religione Militare di S. Giovanni completed in 1703. Following a post mortem on the 1565 Ottoman Siege of Malta, this third volume moves quickly into accounts of 1570's Hospitaller raid on the Ionian island of Santa Maura (modern Levkas), of the 1570 naval Battle of Cape Passero (Sicily), of the 1570-71 Ottoman Siege of Famagusta, Cyprus, and of the 1571 Naval Battle of Lepanto in Greece's Gulf of Patras, the most deadly naval battle in history. While mention is made in the latter instance of Christian Commander Don Juan, half-brother of Spain's King Philip II, there is lengthier treatment of Juan's Ottoman counterpart Muezzinzade Ali, and even lengthier treatment of numerous Hospitallers and lower-ranking Ottomans participating. It is by intention that these histories bring to light contributions of lieutenants, allies, and enemies as well as descriptions of events, heroism, agony, and even tedium leading to the headlines. Hence these four histories also deal with the Hospital's long war against bubonic plague, its prolonged suffering from the greed of Papal nepotism, its constant struggle to remain financially viable, its consequential participation in state-sponsored piracy, and its survival only on the backs of slaves. It is important to realize that Hospitallers were agents of a vast Catholic organization blanketing Europe, and while the largest group of Hospitallers were knights, perhaps half were Chaplains or Serving Brothers. In Europe there were an unknown number of commanderies or local concentrations of knights, chaplains, or serving brothers, perhaps a thousand, many with their own medical facilitity, each with one to thirty Hospitallers operating for-profit enterprises expected to support headquarters with a portion of the profit. And while history focuses on the headquarters, in these volumes at Rhodes, Malta, and in between, by far the majority of Hospitallers rarely or never visited headquarters. Furthermore, the Hospitaller Bailiwick of Brandenburg was a virtually independent organization said by some to be of a size approaching the remaining Hospital, electing its own Herrenmeisters, and with the coming of Martin Luther even abandoning Catholicism. But never quite severing all ties to the parent organization. Similarly the Hospital itself was a semi-independent arm of the Church at Rome. One might conclude, a long-suffering arm of the Church at Rome. The author hopes the reader finds this history as interesting and stimulating as did he.

The Purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) is a controversial plant, regarded both as a Friend and a Foe. In Europe, where the plant is native and commonly found in wetland landscapes, its beautiful purple flowers are admired both in nature and when introduced into gardens. However, in North America, where the plant was introduced by immigrants in the early 1800s, L. salicaria has become a pest, conquering vast areas and displacing native plants. The exceptional success of the newcomer in the New World is primarily attributed to its escape from natural enemies. In the original habitats, the purple loosestrife is controlled and kept in check by plant-eating insects, especially beetles. In America, the alien plant can flourish, and the resources spared from defence are invested in extra growth and reproduction. As a result, the purple loosestrife now occupies all the US states except Florida. Besides the escape of enemies, the purple loosestrife has merits of its own. Hybridization between plants from various origins results in new genomes, enhancing the vitality of the alien. The purple loosestrife tolerates harsh environmental conditions, including dryness and flooding. On the warming planet, the species is one of the beneficiaries of climate change. The newcomer is an undeniable competitive stress factor for native biota. However, the long-term ecological impacts of the purple loosestrife may be relatively minor. In several regions, it has become an established part of wetlands. The abundant riches the flowers provide are a priceless gift for pollinating insects, benefiting agriculture during dry seasons. The purple loosestrife plant is valuable in providing compounds used in medical preparations. Although the purple loosestrife is not an agricultural weed, due to its damage to natural biota, the plant is included in the list of the 100 most deleterious alien organisms in the world. Besides the Americas, the plant has now been established - and is considered a worrisome alien - in Africa and Oceania.

A photo-packed, modern guide to keeping happy, healthy rabbits. Rebecca Bee BSc designed the Rabbit Care and Behaviour Courses for the staff at the Blue Cross animal charity whilst working there as an Animal Behaviourist. As well as a BSc in Animal Care Science and running her own rabbit rescue and behaviour service, the knowledge she imparts in this book offers owners a comprehensive guide to understanding rabbits and their unique needs.Rabbits are one of the most misunderstood companion animals; however, they can be fun and interesting pets when kept appropriately. When you change the way you interact with them and alter some aspects of their lifestyle, they can be transformed into animals who enjoy your company as much as you enjoy theirs. Having rabbits who excitedly run to you, as opposed to away, are a daily joy to greet!Key areas of rabbit care are covered, such as: rabbit behaviour, bonding (including group bonding), suitable housing, litter training, house rabbits, environmental enrichment, taming, nervousness and aggression, grooming, diet, fun training and adopting rescue rabbits. All areas put together result in more rewarding and lower maintenance rabbit care. This book will also help adults guide children in how to interact with their rabbits respectfully and in a way that enhances their relationship. The biggest problems with rabbit care and children are a result of outdated housing and handling information. The photos and easy read style assists owners in creating an environment where their rabbits will be happier, and children and adults can enjoy them without the nervousness and aggression traditional rabbit keeping often causes.Whether you already have rabbits or are preparing to bring them into your life, there is something for everyone in this book. It will help to improve your relationship with these amazing animals and give them the best life possible.

Incompetent surgeons, corrupt royal colleges, nepotism and quackery. The medical establishment - a small coterie of self-serving doctors - went unchallenged. Until 1823, when a young surgeon, son of a farmer, who'd survived being at sea, mastered bare-knuckle fighting, and escaped assassination, did what no doctor had dared. Risking ruin, Thomas Wakley established The Lancet, an uncompromising radical journal which scandalized the establishment and initiated modern health care. Why him? What made him do what thousands hadn't? Based on true events, this novel tells how this ingenious man overcame adversities, driven by his passion for reform.

The Colonel's Plute is set in the 1970s and 1980s, when plutonium was thought to be vital to the UK's nuclear energy programme. The book includes short but important appearances by famous people, such as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, President Ronald Reagan, Tony Benn, and Arthur Scargill, as well as members of the IRA, and Greenpeace, the leading environmentalist group at the time. The story centres, however, upon ordinary people: a family with working links to Sellafield, where much of the UK's plutonium is still stored (until some use is found for it). The head of the family is Sergeant Len Stanton, a policeman, who left the West Midlands with his family for a better paid job with the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority Constabulary; a healthier lifestyle for all of them in the Lake District. Len's wife, Rita, died of cancer, and Len is becoming an increasingly embittered man. Len's son-in-law, Tony Miles, is a process worker working with radioactive materials and married to Jenny. They have a seven-year-old son, Jamie. The boy has leukaemia and is being treated at the world-famous Christie Hospital in Manchester. Jenny is convinced that Jamie's condition has been caused by her husband's work. Len begins to think this may be true, persuaded by a local doctor, who has pointed the finger at Sellafield as the cause of a cancer cluster he claims to have identified in a small village close to the sprawling Sellafield site. The doctor's claims are picked up by the national press, causing panic among those with children, or expecting them. All of this is of little interest to Gaddafi who is desperate to obtain plutonium, convinced that it will give him more authority at home and the status abroad to help him become a major international, respected figure. He has tried to obtain plutonium from several countries but without success. He turns his attention to Sellafield, which is known to have the biggest stockpile of plutonium in the world. He approaches the IRA for assistance, reminding its leaders that he has provided them with finance and weapons for decades. "Now it is payback time," he tells the IRA representative attending the colonel's 25th anniversary celebration of his coup in Libya. Eventually, after a lot of soul searching, a deal is reached. Many of the cases of plute held in the Sellafield plutonium store have been there for decades, and potentially explosive nitrogen gas has built up in them. If this happened, plutonium, in powder form, could spread over the countryside, the government deciding that all the cans must be repackaged. It is not going to be easy. It will involve moving the cans around the Sellafield site and in and out of makeshift storage facilities, providing an obvious opportunity for theft. Len Stanton sees what's going on but turns a blind eye to it. The IRA succeeds in stealing a small amount of plute for the colonel. It is shipped to Libya and promptly impounded as soon as the ship arrives in Libya. The source of the information about its movements is Michael Quinn, thought by Greenpeace to be one of their most enthusiastic supporters (and by the IRA as one of their own silent members). He is in fact employed by America's Central Intelligence Agency, the CIA. His main contact in Libya is Captain Hassan al-Rida, the colonel's aide-de-camp, the leader of a group of young Libyan officers who want Gaddafi removed, dead or alive. They believe he has dissipated his nation's oil wealth supporting other countries rather than improving the conditions of his own people. President Reagan and Prime Minister Thatcher have been kept informed of events by the CIA and it is they who tell my readers how my book ends and what happens to those who made an appearance in it.

WHEN SARAH GETS HER CHANCE, her one and only chance, to fulfil some of her deepest emotional and sexual desires, was she wrong to seize the opportunity? Are the lines between fidelity and adultery really black and white or is there a possibility that they can be acceptably blurred? Her story doesn't set out to answer these questions - simply to ask that the reader save any considerations until the end before forming an opinion on Sarah and her actions and decisions. To the outsider, or anyone reading this book from the 'innocent' party of an adulterous relationship, what Sarah created was a decade long web of lies and deceit sprinkled with episodes of unadulterated passion. The question the book poses is not whether Sarah was right or wrong or whether the reader believes her to be right or wrong. The question to be answered is given the exact same circumstances - what would YOU have done?

Dixon and Amelie Boyd were Belfast medical students. Later he was a Cambridge Professor and she an Academic's wife. They and their four sons, became a Cambridge mid-century fixture. Their copious letters (and memories of those sons, the authors) bring to light an unvarnished picture of that University at a time of dramatic change. Darlingest, It not only seems but it was a long time ago. We were half our present ages; the war was no more than a shadow of a man's hand in bright sunlight - possible but not very probable... In a wider field no atomic power or bombs; no television; unemployment and a servant class; no penicillin; no Russian imperialism and a well-established British Empire. We had not even dreamed of Cambridge, let alone three periods of residence and a Chair and Clare. Dixon Boyd to his wife on their 25th wedding anniversary 19 August 1958 On the Margins of War Jews, Blacks and Irish Sex and Psychoanalysis Who knew Who Scholarship, Science and Preferment Clare College as Family This volume tells us what they then thought and how they then acted.

This autobiography is an account of Frieda Brewster's remarkable life. She was born in America to socialist immigrant parents from Croatia. The journey begins with her childhood in Pittsburgh, her left-wing student activism, her experience of the Great Depression when she had to leave university and her campaigning with the American Communist party. Here she met and at the age of 18 married a Scottish Communist, Pat Devine, who was arrested for leading trade union action. After spending a year in jail, he was deported to Scotland. Frieda went with him and a new chapter of her journey unfolds She settled in the UK where she spent the rest of her life. Her account here centres around her life as an active Communist. She details her fascinating experiences in the Soviet Union; her activity as a courier for the Communist International movement (Comintern), where she delivered money to anti-fascist groups in Germany in the 1930s and to the Communist Party in China. After the birth of her son, she continued her political activities in the UK. She worked at the central headquarters of the British Communist Party for a number of years. She played an active role at the centre for the recruitment and support for the British volunteers to the International Brigade fighting fascism in the Spanish Civil war. During this period, she was also involved in campaigns in her local area, including the demonstrations against the rising British Fascist moment of Oswald Mosely and the battle of Cable Street. After the war she trained as a primary school teacher. She had a daughter, divorced her husband and remarried. She was active in her union and CND, became interested in and supportive of the Women's Liberation Movement and demonstrated at Greenham Common. She retained her socialist convictions throughout her life and shares interesting reflections on convulsions in the Communist movement. She became a committed Euro Communist, convinced of the need for a democratic route to Socialism. This is not at all a dry outline of a life but rather a lively, personal and moving account of a woman's experiences, struggles, both personal and political, and of her personal growth.

What does it really mean to be a man in the modern world? "I'm fine" is the typical male response to the simple question: How are you feeling? But it is not fine. Men's mental and physical health is taking a battering like never before; the image of a man is more distorted than ever before, and the meaning of what it means to be a man is more uncertain than ever before. This all despite years of attempting to help men to open up about their feelings and understand their behaviours. But men are killing themselves at shocking rates. They also account for the majority of addicts and die younger than women. Put simply, men, especially young men, have lost their identity in the world. This book reports the alarming statistics regarding men's physical and mental health and includes personal stories facing men today. Crucially, it offers practical and positive solutions to the growing crisis faced by males of all ages. For equality to continue to grow, we must accept that men have uniquely male problems that need to be recognised, acknowledged and addressed by businesses and the wider society health and includes personal stories facing men today.
