Saki's (a.k.a Hector Hugh Munro) unique brand of humor has resonated with readers for over a century. Both macabre and also at times vicious, his writing nonetheless manages to perfectly capture the trivial absurdities of the Edwardian era in England. His subjects are almost always louche members of the upper classes - in particular his perfectly observed anti-heroes such as Clovis and Reginald - who wouldn't feel out of place in the world of P.G Wodehouse's 'Bertie Wooster'. The fatal flaw of hypocrisy receives particular attention in Saki's world, with vengeful justice often meted out in the most unlikely and unexpected fashion by birds, beasts and children alike. This collection contains both novels by Saki, all of his short story collections, and also his individual short stories the were published outside collections - in total 145 separate works.

Hector Hugh Munro, or Saki, as he was known to his avid readers, worked as a news correspondent who had ample opportunity to travel the world and observe many cultures of the East. He lifted his pen name from the popular Rubáiyat of Omar Khayyám. In Farsi, the word "saki" means wine. His short satirical stories, filled with well-turned phrases and cynical irony, are reminiscent of O. Wilde and O. Henry. Black humor permeates almost all of Saki's work. In the realm of social satire, Munro influenced Evelyn Waugh and Wodhouse. Contents: INTRODUCTION TO SAKI'S STORIES; REGINALD; REGINALD IN RUSSIA; THE CHRONICLES OF CLOVIS; BEASTS AND SUPER-BEASTS; THE TOYS OF PEACE; THE SQUARE EGG AND OTHER SKETCHES; AN UNCOLLECTED STORY; THE UNREST-CURE; THE MUSIC ON THE HILL and more short satirical stories.

'When William Came' exemplifies a mesmerizing anthology that elegantly captures the socio-political satire prevalent during the early 20th century, curated through the sharp pen of H.H. Munro, more famously known as Saki. This collection showcases a variety of literary styles, primarily focusing on short stories that merge dark humor with biting social commentary. The anthology, rich in metaphorical and figurative language, offers a profound glimpse into the tensions and transitions of its era, drawing in readers with its vivid portrayal of a Britain under hypothetical German rule, which stands out as a provocative alternate history scenario. The anthology gains depth from Saki's unique background as a writer and journalist who lived through and commented on the turbulence of the Edwardian period. His keen observations of societal norms and the absurdities of upper-class England are peppered with irony and cynicism, making his narratives both enthralling and educationally poignant. His work not only aligns with but also critically contributes to the wider discourse on imperialism and nationalism, presenting an intertwining of personal wit and broader political critique. 'When William Came' is a compelling invitation to explore the astute reflections of Saki on themes of conquest, societal change, and cultural resilience. Readers seeking a blend of historical insight and literary artistry will find this anthology a treasure trove of intellectual stimulation. Embarking on this literary journey offers a unique opportunity to witness the interplay of narrative flair and critical commentary, all while engaging with the historical dialogues that continue to shape modern perceptions of culture and power.
