Robert Burns was by far and away the most iconic figure in nineteenth-century Scotland. Multiple editions of his works poured incessantly from the presses. Unprecedentedly large crowds gathered to commemorate him at huge festivals and at the unveiling of memorials. His work was at the heart of the palpable rise of Scottish-ness that swept Scotland from the 1840s through to the First World War, including demands for Home Rule. If Walter Scott imagined Scotland, Burns shaped it. He gave ordinary Scots in what had been one of the most socially uneven societies in Europe a sense of self-worth and dignity, and underpinned demands for political and social justice. In this major new book, Christopher Whatley describes the several contests there were to 'own' - and mould - Burns, from Tories through Radicals to middle-class urban improvers. But the Kirk condemned Burns as the Antichrist, deplored the Burns cult ('Burnomania') - a slur on a nation that prided itself on its strict Presbyterian inheritance. The result is a fascinating picture of the role Burns played after his death in shaping multiple facets of Scottish society.

This book deals with the problem of Scottish identity within the British context in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. On James VI's succession to the English throne in 1603 the Scots were troubled at the prospect of Scotland's nationhood being absorbed by a supremely confident and intolerant England. Their strategic response was to develop a self-conscious attention to Scotland's past. The non-institutionalised nature of Scottish society made it difficult for the Scots to produce a long and respectable history to vie with England's much-vaunted and impressive pedigree. The idea that the Scots seized on to define and validate their identity was that of the covenant with God – and this had profound and far-reaching results. This original and stimulating book provides a valuable contribution to the understanding of the processes of secularisation in early modern Europe, and indicates the significant ways in which the Scottish experience differed from that of England. It therefore provides a useful corrective to an Anglocentric interpretation of 'Britain'.

The essays in this book, all by distinguished historians, illuminate the main activities, preoccupations and aspirations of the families whose territorial power and local leadership made them a central factor in medieval Scottish society. Issues discussed include the influence of Anglo-Norman England on earlier medieval Scotland, patterns of land accumulation by the aristocracy, noble residences, the legal and administrative aspects of baronial lordship, clientage, and dealings between magnates and the Church. Throughout, the essays stress the importance of recognising that, before the Wars of Independence, the nobility of Scotland was closely bound by ties of kinship and property with the nobility in England and emphasise that the common assumption of perpetual opposition between baronage and the Crown is a myth. Francis Hutcheson (1694–1745) has traditionally been celebrated for his moral philosophy, which greatly influenced David Hume and other thinkers of the Enlightenment. But he was also the founder of modern philosophical aesthetics, the source of many of Adam Smith's economic ideas (Smith was one of his students) and the major philosophical influence on eighteenth-century North America, especially on the abolitionist movement. For these reasons, British, American and European philosophers have reassessed his philosophy, and this volume provides a comprehensive and rounded collection of his essays on all aspects of his thinking. The essays dealing with aesthetics and ethics are drawn from Hutcheson's four Treatises and Reflections upon Laughter written in Dublin 1725–28. Essays dealing with his legal, political and economic ideas are taken from A System of Moral Philosophy (published posthumously in 1755) and from A Short Introduction to Moral Philosophy (1747). Professor Robin Downie provides an analytical introduction to Hutcheson's thought and locates it in the culture and chronology of Hutcheson's life and times.

Jordan Fantosme was a twelfth-century cleric, teacher and poet, possibly a member of the royal or baronial court, writing for King Henry II. His Chronicle describes some of the events and actions of the civil war between Henry II and his eldest son Henry, the 'Young King', during 1173 and 1174. The main focus of the text, including most of Fantosme's explicitly eyewitness accounts, is on the fighting in Northumberland, where King William I of Scotland, in support of the Young King, broke off ties with Henry II and invaded the north of England. Fantosme's vivid portrayal of the skirmish outside Alnwick, in which King William the Lion was captured, is one of the most memorable parts of this extraordinary account. Fantosme's reputation was that of a naïve and trustworthy reporter, and his Chronicle is regarded as a reliable source, but it is a much more elegant and sophisticated text than originally thought. In his introduction to this translation of the Anglo-Norman text, R. C. Johnston discusses the author's uncertain identity, whether he was an eyewitness to events of the war and problems with the manuscripts. He also reassesses the literary and aesthetic value of the Chronicle, revealing Fantosme as a highly competent and talented story-teller capable of manipulating episodes for stylistic reasons.

This is the first volume of a distance-learning history of Scotland course. The 26 major topics are covered in five books, designed for self-study and written to accompany the course. These volumes are: two tutorial volumes, two volumes of reprinted articles and essays, and a volume of documents. The first half of the course covers the period 1707 to 1850. Very little is known about the battle of Carham, fought between the Scots and Northumbrians in 1018. The leaders were probably Máel Coluim II, king of Scotland, and Uhtred of Bamburgh, earl or ealdorman in Northumbria. This large-scale anthology of early Scottish Literature, now revised, has been designed as a teaching text for use by school and university students. Longer works are either presented complete - e.g. James I, King is Quair; as long extracts with explanatory linking passages - e.g. Urquhart, The Jewel; or by sections which sum up the main themes and concerns of the text-e.g. Barbour's Bruce Book I. There are full critical and linguistic introductions; brief biographical and bibliographical introductions for each author or sub-section; the texts have all been re-edited; every difficult word is glossed, and full explanatory notes appear at the foot of each page. A substantial Appendix presents texts in Latin, Scots, English and Gaelic from the seventeenth century, demonstrating the vitality and interaction of these voices within the Scottish tradition. A noteworthy feature of the book is Professor Jack's Critical Introduction, 'Where Stands Scottish Literature Now?' This challenges many widely-held assumptions about Scottish literature. In particular it seeks to explore the reasons behind the strange neglect of the writers of the seventeenth century. Basing its argument on the texts of the Anthology as a whole, it seeks to re-define the accepted canon and suggests an alternative way of approaching Scottish literary history.
